Mark Antony joins with Octavius to get revenge for Caesar’s murder. But Mark Antony speaks next and while he doesn’t directly condemn the conspirators, his choice of words turns the crowd against them and they are forced to flee the city. Caesar exclaims “et tu, Brute” (you too, Brutus), and then he dies.Īt Caesar’s funeral, Brutus addresses the people and convinces them that Caesar’s murder was necessary in order to protect Rome and the people. Once at the Senate, Brutus, Cassius and their co-conspirators surround Caesar and one by one, they stab him. But the conspirators come to Caesar’s house, still pretending to be his friends and supporters, and they convince him to come to the Capitol. She begs her husband to stay away from the senate that day. Caesar’s wife Calphurnia tells him she has had strange dreams that forecast terrifying events. The next day is March 15, the Ides of March. Brutus is conflicted over what to do, but at last he decides to join with Cassius and the others in a plan to assassinate Caesar. Cassius tries to persuade Caesar’s good friend Brutus that Caesar must be killed to protect the republic. Meantime, a group of senators led by Cassius believe that Caesar’s success and impending political reforms could pose a threat to their status and power. Mark Antony, along with the citizens, offers Caesar the crown three times each time, Caesar refuses it. As they arrive, a soothsayer advises him to “beware the Ides of March,” but he dismisses the warning. He attends a victory gathering with his supporters and friends. Julius Caesar has just returned to Rome as a hero after a great military success.
